MCE details that trip people up
- You must be an MCE customer in an MCE city: Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Danville, Moraga, Pleasant Hill, Concord and unincorporated Contra Costa (including Alamo, Blackhawk and Diablo).
- The home must be a single-family detached house you own and have lived in for at least 12 months.
- Existing solar or EV charging must have been installed at least 12 months earlier, and you can't add solar, batteries or EV charging for 12 months after the heat pump.
- A participating MCE contractor must do the install. Self-installs don't qualify, and rebates aren't retroactive.

Orinda and Clayton: not MCE
Orinda and Clayton get electricity from PG&E bundled service rather than MCE (MCE), so MCE rebates don't apply. Check BayREN and PG&E's current offers, and expect fewer incentives this year. More on Orinda heat pumps.
Be careful with big rebate claims
Search results still show figures like "up to $8,000" or "$3,000 from PG&E" for this area. We couldn't find a current program offering those amounts to Contra Costa single-family homes. If a bid relies on a rebate, ask for the program name and a link, and make sure the contract price doesn't depend on it.
What to ask a contractor about rebates
- Are you a participating MCE contractor?
- Which program, which amount, and is it reserved or just applied for?
- Who files the paperwork and when is it paid?
- Is the quoted price before or after the rebate?
Rebate questions
Is there a federal tax credit for heat pumps in 2026?
No. The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, per the IRS.
Does PG&E offer a heat pump rebate in Orinda?
Orinda and Clayton are not MCE member cities, so MCE rebates don't apply. Check BayREN and PG&E's current offers before you sign; as of October 4, 2026, BayREN's 2026 Energy-Smart Homes funding is fully subscribed.
Does Contra Costa County have a heat pump rebate?
The county's rebates and incentives page lists no county heat pump rebate as of October 4, 2026.
Can I get the MCE rebate if I install it myself?
No. MCE requires installation by a participating MCE contractor, and rebates can't be applied retroactively.
